Best Time to Visit Meghalaya
October to April (Best Season)
This is the best time to visit Meghalaya, when the weather is pleasant and skies are clear. Temperatures generally range between 10°C and 25°C, making it perfect for sightseeing, trekking, and exploring attractions like Cherrapunji, Dawki, and the Living Root Bridges.
May to September (Monsoon Season)
Meghalaya receives very heavy rainfall, especially in places like Cherrapunji and Mawsynram, which are among the wettest places on Earth. During this time, waterfalls and greenery are at their most spectacular, but travel can sometimes be affected by continuous rain.
Winter (December to February)
Winter is cool and pleasant, with temperatures sometimes dropping to 5°C in Shillong. This is a great time for travelers who enjoy crisp mountain weather and clear scenic views.
How to Reach Meghalaya
Meghalaya, known as the “Abode of Clouds,” is one of the most scenic destinations in Northeast India. The state is well connected by air, rail, and road, with Shillong serving as the main gateway for travelers.
By Air
The nearest major airport to Meghalaya is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam, located about 120 km from Shillong. This airport has regular flights from major Indian cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Bangalore.
From Guwahati Airport, visitors can hire a taxi or take a shared cab to reach Shillong in about 3–3.5 hours.
There is also a small airport in Meghalaya called Shillong Airport (Umroi Airport), about 30 km from Shillong, but it currently has limited flight connectivity.
By Train
The nearest railway station is Guwahati Railway Station, which is well connected with major Indian cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Chennai.
From Guwahati Railway Station, travelers can reach Shillong by taxi or shared vehicle in around 3 hours.
By Road
Meghalaya has excellent road connectivity with Assam and other Northeast states. The most common route is Guwahati → Shillong via NH6, which offers beautiful views of the hills and the famous Umiam Lake along the way.
Regular shared taxis, private cabs, and buses operate from Guwahati to Shillong and other major destinations like Cherrapunji and Dawki.
